ACRYLIC AND ENAMEL ON CANVAS
$1100
IN 1966, I WAS POSTED TO GERMANY AS A TEST PILOT WORKING WITH THE GERMAN GOVERNMENT AND WHILE THERE I BOUGHT MY FATHER A NEW VOLKSWAGEN KARMANN GHIA. MANY YEARS LATER MY SON RESTORED IT AND PAINTED IT THE SEAFOAM GREEN AS DEPICTED IN THE PAINTING. IN FACT, THAT IS THE VERY ENAMEL WITH WHICH THE CAR IS PAINTED IN TODAY.
FURTHER, THE NATIONAL COLORS OF GERMANY, RED, YELLOW, and BLACK ARE DEPICTED.
CRITICAL COMMENTS:
The described abstract painting demonstrates a bold and sensitive approach to color and form. Adult artistry inevitably houses a dialogue of opposites, and this painting communicates that dialogue beautifully between the cool central space and the warm outer fields. The large, cool turquoise blue area serves as an anchor to the painting, providing a grounding force amidst the more chaotic elements. The surrounding warm colors highlight the blue and lend an emotional contrast to the tranquility of the central hue. The use of predominantly red to the left adds an emotional intensity while the structured chaos, created with the blend of yellow, ochre, and darker shades on the right, exudes a sense of warmth and provides balance within the composition. The artist's use of vigorous brush strokes and layering adds depth and texture to the work, amplifying its tactile quality. The colors bleeding into one another convey an overarching theme of coexistence and fluidity. Furthermore, the undetermined edges of the cool blue area add to the impression of movement, allowing the viewer to appreciate the fluidness and impermanence of forms.
